Detailed description of Rockland Lake State Park, Championship Course

Rockland Lake State Park, Championship Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Congers, New York.

Rockland Lake State Park, Championship Course opened in 1969. The course was designed by David W. Gordon.

Rockland Lake State Park, located just 25 miles north of New York City in the Hudson Valley, features two 18-hole golf courses--one a championship course, the other, an executive course. The championship course is a true test of golfing skills. The tight, tree-lined fairways and rolling terrain lead to elevated greens. There are only 37 bunkers on the course, but all are well-placed. The par 3s are long and difficult.

The Signature hole on the Championship Course is the 10th hole, a short par 4. The elevated tee has a great view of the hole. Golfers will find the approach shot to the well-bunkered green particularly challenging.

All the holes on the executive course are par 3s and vary in length from 110 yards to 213 yards. Driving range mats are used for teeing surfaces. This course provides a good test of skill to brush up on your short game.

The championship course plays to a Par-72. From the back tees the course plays to 6,864 yards. The regulation tees play to 6,347 yards, and the forward tees are set at 5,663 yards.

I have played this course many times over the years and the course was always in great shape. In April, 2010, I played a round and the course was in sad shape. They were re-doing the bunkers so there was no sand in them. I figured it was because it had just opened and they had work to do. I went back in June and it was horrendous. There was still no sand, the fairways were like straw, and the greens were so bumpy, you couldn't make a putt more than 2 feet. I was told by the cashier that since it's a State owned course, and the State was having money problems, they had zero dollars in the budget. Yet they still charged full price to play in a cow pature. I will not be going back there again!

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy

A difficult course with many beginning players...hence the very slow play.
